Extending Application functionality on S60

May 1st, 2007 by abhishta

S60 currently has a nice application database (both free and paid). But why are symbian applications confined to the boundary of that application itself? What about the possibility of extending an application’s functionality to other applications?

It might sound a bit cooky at first, but allowing applications to call other applications has a lot of advantages, particularly with widgets functionality being rolled into the S60 UI in FP2, Nokia could consider allowing users to access an installed widget’s functionality via the pre-installed S60 apps.

For example, when browsing via the built-in S60 browser, if I want to translate some text in a web page, I could possibly select the text, press a pre-defined key and small pop-up would show up showing the list of compatible widgets. Select the translator widget and the that widget would open with the text preloaded in the input field. Click on translate, get your result and then press exit to go back to the browser. Seamless!  No need to have to do it the hard way like we usually do with S60 phones.

I can already think of how this might be useful with a few other pre-installed S60 applications like Messaging or even  with GPS.

What does everyone else think? Would you like to see this on your S60 phone?
